Whos afraid of the big, bad wolf?
While wolf recovery programs meet resistance from communities across the United States, most fears are bred from fiction, not fact. Wolves rarely attack cattle unless (like anyone) they’re driven to starvation, and some wolf groups even pay ranchers per head of cattle killed by wolves. Contrary to popular belief, wolves don’t consume everything in their path. They won’t strip a forest of other wildlife. “Wolves often enhance prey populations by culling weak and sick animals from the gene pool, leaving only the strongest animals to reproduce.” (SERConline) Caged Creatures: During the summer of 1999, six wolves spent their days locked in a horse trailer. Two bears were also trapped in trailers – neglected and suffering from the sweltering Las Vegas, Nevada, heat. Animal activists, with the help of TV crews, saved the bears but left the wolves to wallow in their own feces. One wolf died.
