Commerce’s Safety and Buildings Division is tasked by s. 101.14 , Wis. Stats., with providing fire inspections, prevention, detection and suppression statewide. Commerce officials and their deputies enter into and upon all buildings, premises and public thoroughfares except the interior of private dwellings, for the purpose of ascertaining and causing to be corrected any condition liable to cause fire, or any violation of any law or order relating to the fire hazard or the prevention of fire. In order to accomplish this task, the department has a staff of five Fire Prevention Coordinators who work closely with the 862 fire departments around the state. The chief of every fire department in every city, village or town except for cities of the 1st class, is constituted a deputy of the department for the purposes noted, and is empowered to designate a sufficient number of inspectors to make the required inspections.
