Who won the very first ashes cricket match?
The first “Ashes” was won by England. Although the first game between the two was won by Australia in Australia. It wasn’t called the ashes until after the first time Australia beat England in England which was at the Oval in Aug 1882. A mock obituary was printed in the papers stating English Cricket had died and that the body would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. When England were going back to Australia the captain promised to regain the ashes. Which they did. So I would say the first Ashes was won by England. Although Australia have won the most Ashes series but not by much, it is fairly even. There is a few theories about what the Ashes are in the urn. Some say bails, the ashes of a cricketer or a woman’s vail. Edit: Although Australia won the first game between these two teams it wasn’t the ashes at the time. Official records for the ashes start at the 1882-83 tour which England won. Australia never won an ashes series until the 1891-92 tour.
