Garrison Johnson led Jackson State with 16 points, while Grant Maxey finished with 11 points. Memphis limited Jackson State to 37 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers. The Tigers went on a 17-1 run capped by a 3-pointer from Mack to put the game away in the second half. Jackson State missed 13 of its first 15 shots, but Memphis didn’t do much better, allowing Jackson State to keep it close until the Tigers closed the first half with a 21-6 run that left them up 38-21 at the half. It was impossible, of course, for first-year coach Josh Pastner to ask his University of Memphis players for more than that this season. Given everything they had gone through going all the way back to April, when this program was left with something that only resembled a roster, Pastner knew the only way this was going to work was if the Tigers got the maximum every night out of their eight healthy scholarship players.
