Who won the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland?
The 1916 Easter Rising was put down by the English yes. The proclamation was read out by the rebels to basically proclaim their independence from the English as they did not want to be under English rule it was not a legal document that gave Irish independence merely that they wanted it. As for getting independence that essentially came after the Irish war for Independence with the signing of the Anglo Irish treaty which have Ireland the 26 counties of the south and england kept the 6 counties of the north. This was in 1922 but the Republic did not come into existence or have complete independence from England until 1949. That is the basics of course there is so much more involved in this with the struggle for independence and what happened in between, but hopefully this gives you a vague idea and wont rant on about every little detail!
