Who won in the opening round of the US Senior Open at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Indiana?
Golf is one of those games you can play well into your twilight years and for the over-50 set of former PGA Tour stars, the Champions Tour offers another shot at Major Championship glory. The biggest names will be out there at Crooked Stick, in Carmel, Indiana, the where John Daly crashed on to golf’s world stage in 1991 (he didn’t burn until later). Sure, there are big names like: Greg Norman, Fuzzy Zoeller, Tom Watson but for anyone from Southern California, you might enjoy following players like Jerry “Mouse” Bruner, Michael Turner, amateur and Dave Stockton. Mouse Bruner, nicknamed after the cartoon character Mighty Mouse due to his mastodonically long drives, despite being just 5’6″ tall, worked at Papa’s supermarket in West Los Angeles from 1984-1995. He’s one of the most popular players on the European Senior Tour. Dan Russo, one of the Capital Region’s top amateur golfers, took his game to the national stage today, shooting a 7-over-par 79 in the opening round of the U.S. Senior Open at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Ind. Russo, a 51-year-old Amsterdam native who lives in nearby Hagaman, had his round derailed by a triple-bogey 7 on the 435-yard eighth hole and a double-bogey 5 on the 211-yard 17th hole. He left the course 13 strokes behind the tournament leaders. He finished with three birdies, two of them on par 5s, and eight pars. Russo was 3 over through 15 holes before finishing bogey-double bogey-bogey. He hit only 5 of 14 fairways but reached 11 of 18 greens in regulation. He averaged 1.83 putts per hole.
