Who will pay for the cleanup?

The responsible parties have paid for all investigation and other costs incurred to date and they will pay most of the $47 million cost of future cleanup work. To help defray that cost, they have applied for a grant from the Great Lakes National Program Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which will award a limited number of grants to encourage prompt, innovative cleanups near the Great Lakes. Also, in exchange for certain ecological improvements to the cleanup, the MPCA has agreed not to seek reimbursement from the responsible parties for some of the oversight costs the MPCA has incurred to date.
