Who will determine what regional, national, and local assessments will be undertaken as part of the MA?
The Board will make the decisions about which regional, national, and local assessments will receive funding through the MA process. The MA will fund a loosely nested cluster of assessment activities ranging from local to regional in two “focal” areas. The Board decided that Southern Africa and Southeast Asia will be the first two focal regions funded in full by the Assessment. The Board will provide seed funding over the course of the first year to develop regional clusters in Northern/Central Europe and Central America/Mexico. At least two other assessments will be included in the sub-global component. An “outlier” assessment will likely be undertaken to examine an ecosystem type not included in the regional clusters (e.g. island ecosystems), and a “cross-cutting” assessment will be selected to study the effects of similar driving forces across different regions. Independent assessments, undertaken with their own resources and following the MA methodology can also readily be approved
