I was at a dinner party the other day when, upon hearing of my interest in environmental ethics, a lady brought the new Pixar movie WALL-E up in conversation. WALL-E is about the last Clean-Up robot standing after humans have left the planet due to trash from rampant consumerism, induced by the huge corporation, Buy N’ Large. If we look around, we realize this movie hits a little close to home. I was canoeing recently and remembered seeing everything from an old washtub to candy wrappers clogging the banks of the stream. As far as movies go though, there have been quite a few “Doomsday” ones with environmental messages in the past few years, but this one has struck a different chord than say, The Day After Tomorrow. Why? Well, first, WALL-E is a far superior movie, in about every way (Sorry Jake Gyllenhaal). Secondly, it markets itself to a younger audience, though of course, Pixar movies are enjoyed by adults as well. The lady who brought it up told me that, after seeing WALL-E, her 5

Wall-E, a small robot who collects all that trash, compacts it into blocks, and stacks it into skyscrapers. His job is to clean it all up so that one day the people may return. We can see that there were once others like Wall-E, but they have broken down, leaving the little rust bucket as the last robot standing.
