Who were the three wise men?
First – there were not three wise men. There were three GIFTS! We do not know how many “wise men” there were. Maybe one, maybe 25. What we do know is that back then, if you were traveling with precious cargo, you would bring your protective military with you. Perhaps 100-500 soldiers were with each of them. If you don’t know about the number of wise men (Because you’ve never even read it), then you also don’t know that they didn’t show up to Jesus until He was about 2 y.o. Maybe even 3 or 4. They didn’t follow a star. They were “told” by God as was everyone else that had heard that a Messiah was born. How did King Herod “know” that a Messiah had been born? It had been prophesied for HUNDREDS of years! You’ve been listening to stories again!
Matthew chapter two talks about the Wise Men however, it does not mention their names. As for the STAR: I found in Matthew ch 2 verse 2 2and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east[b] and have come to worship him.” Matthew Ch 2:9-12 9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east[e] went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?
the three wise men or the so called “Maggi or Magi” are named Melchior, Caspar and Baltazar. …..in the Holy Bible, it is said that the wise men were greeted by an angel and told them to follow the star which led them to Christ’s manger. It is not astrology that guided them but an angel who gave them the advice. I study in a Catholic school but I never saw the word astrolgy or astrologer in the Bible…..at the very least.
Jesus’ Life and Ministry Jesus and the Astrologers A NUMBER of men come from the East. They are astrologers—people who claim to interpret the position of stars. While they were at home in the East, they saw a new star, and they have followed it hundreds of miles to Jerusalem. When the astrologers get to Jerusalem, they ask: ‘Where is the child born to be king of the Jews? We saw his star and have come to bow down to him.’ When King Herod at Jerusalem hears about this, he is very upset. So he calls the chief priests and asks: ‘Where is the Christ to be born?’ Basing their reply on the Scriptures, they answer: ‘In Bethlehem.’ At that Herod has the astrologers brought to him and tells them: ‘Go search for the child, and when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and bow down to him too.’ But, at heart, Herod wants to find the child to kill him! After they leave, an amazing thing happens. The star they had seen when they were in the East travels ahead of them. Clearly, this
