who were the staunchest Unionists during the war?
I know West Virginia and significant parts of east Tennessee were Unionist, and I’ve always assumed the same held for those analogous parts of Kentucky. Now I know Unionist doesn’t necessarily mean “racially progressive” – which would itself make the true purpose of this imagery even more clear. There’s also a whole lot of WV folks along the border with Kentucky who feel more of an affinity with the southern states than you would imagine- particularly for folks who only live a day’s drive away from chicago.
