Who were the star runners at yesterday’s NJSIAA/Star-Ledger Group Championships?”
Don Bosco Prep and Westfield score stunning victories By Jim Lambert for the Star-Ledger November 15, 2009, 9:55AM One was a long shot and the other was an underdog. But together Don Bosco Prep and Westfield pulled off the biggest surprises at yesterday’s NJSIAA/Star-Ledger Group Championships at wet and wild Holmdel Park. Almost everyone expected Don Bosco, No. 4 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, to come up short in its attempt to win a fourth straight Non-Public A title. Afterall, it was going up against the No. 1 team in the state and the No. 17 team in the nation in Christian Brothers Acdamy. But Don Bosco pulled off a shocker, 44-60, to secure its fourth straight trophy. Meanwhile, No. 6 Westfield, which lost to No. 5 Ridge in the North Jersey, Section 2 Group 4 race last week, ran its best race of the season and avenged that loss, 133-160 over Ridge, to capture the wide open Group 4 title. It’s the first state title for Westfield since 1996 and its 13th overall, No. 3 in state history.
