Who Were The Participants In The Dred Scott V. Sanford Supreme Court Case?
Dred Scott v. Sandford involved Dred Scott and his wife. They were held as slaves by a man who travelled from a slaveholding state to a free state. He sued for their freedom on the basis that once they set foot in a free state where slavery was prohibited, they were no longer to be considered as property, but as free citizens. In one of the most appallingly bad decisions of the supreme court, the justices held that as slaves the Scotts were not US citizens and therefore could not have standing to sue for their freedom.
