JODOROWSKY They were extras in Mexican films. Old extras. They liked doing that scene very much, and the young man excited them very much. The young man hated those women … hated them … but when we shot the scene, he had a problem. When we filmed the part where they devour him, he had an erection. He couldn’t keep himself from having an erection with the old women. And he was very embarrassed. But he had it. And the women were happy. Their lives changed. It was a brief, beautiful moment of life. One of the women used to be an opera singer; another, a rhumba dancer. I don’t know about the others. Except for one detail: the scar that one of the women has on her arm. It was inflicted when a two-hundred-forty-five kilo iron statue of Christ fell from a cross and broke her arm.
