Who were the Diggers?
The Diggers were a group of radicals led by Gerard Winstanley. They opposed the enclosure of common land and aimed to ‘give back the land to the people’. They dug up the common at St George’s Hill, near Weybridge in Surrey in 1649. The movement was easily suppressed by Cromwell. See http://www.diggers.org/diggers/digg_eb.html#Digger and other sites.
