Who Were Shamokin?
Shamokin was basically a multi-ethnic Native American trading rural community on the Susquehanna River. It is situated near the site of the modern Sunbury, Pennsylvania. The village comprised of Iroquois migrants from the north, and Shawnee and Lenape settlers of the settlement of Pennsylvania. Shamokin is basically a borough situated on Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., on Shamokin Creek, about 45 M. the name was derived from Shamokin Creek; the name is most likely a mutilation of a Delaware Indian word, which means “full of eels.” The total area comprises of 80.7 square kilometres, of which 80.4 square kilometres is land and 0.3 square kilometres is water.
