Who were Ajax and Achilles in Greek Mythology?

Given how crappy some of the online mythology sites are for Greek myth and legend questions you’re better off checking hard copy !!! A lot of them just copy from each other! Achilles was the son of the demi goddess Thetis of the Nereids and Peleus the king of Thessaly and his mother by bathing him in the river Styx had rendered him invulnerable to most injuries unless some thing struck his heel hence the phrase Achilles’ heel. There was two Ajaxes at Troy. “Big” Ajax the son of Telamon and Ajax the Locrian prince. There may or may not have been historical persons behind the legends.
