Bob Griese started the season as the starting QB but suffered a fractured leg and dislocated ankle in Game 5 of the 1972 season against the San Diego Chargers. He was replaced by Earl Morrall who started all of the games up to and including the AFC championship game against the Steelers. Morrall was replaced by Griese in the second half of the game and was the starter in the Super Bowl.
