Who was the original person to play Mr Clean on the commercials?”
House Peters Jr was a muscular man and so he was always cast as the heavy in his many roles on television in shows like Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, The Twilight Zone, and Lassie. He didn’t like playing the villian but whatever role he was cast in he always gave it his all. His most famous role came though in a commercial. From the late 1950’s and in the 1960’s he played Mr. Clean for Proctor and Gamble’s line of commercial household cleaners. His became an iconic image of the muscular man in a white t-shirt, bald head, and a hoop earring who wasn’t going to put up with household grime. He was going to get it clean! I remember these commercials from my childhood. House Peters gave up acting in 1967. His is a bit of an unusual story. His father was a rather famous actor, Robert House Peters, Sr. and he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. House Peters even wrote a book about the other side of Hollywood where he described his life growing up as the son of a famous actor. House passed away
