Who was the heaviest person to ride an English Derby winner?
The conditions for the first Derby at Epsom, won by Diomed, required colts to carry 8 stone, fillies to carry 7 stone, 11 pounds. That’s 112 pounds for colts, 109 pounds for fillies. Nowadays colts carry 9 stone (126 pounds) and fillies carry 121 pounds. With regards to heaviest person to ride a Derby winner, that would take a lot more research than I’m willing to do with regards to the actual weights of the jockeys. Mick Kinane, who won this year’s Derby on Sea the Stars, is reported to not be able to ride at less than 8 stone 6 pounds and has had problems with weight (scroll ‘way down on this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/200… but I don’t know if he’s the heaviest.
