Who was the Greek God Ariadne (Arianna in Latin)?
She was the daughter of King Minos of Crete and his queen Pasiphaë, daughter of the sun-god Helios. Her father had successfully waged war against the Athenians and, in victory, had demanded that every nine years they send seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls to Crete, where they would be devoured by the Minotaur that lived in the Labyrinth. This had been going on for a couple of decades when Theseus volunteered to slay the Minotaur. He took the place of one of the men marked for sacrifice and sailed to Crete. Ariadne fell in love with Theseus upon seeing him and helped him in his quest by giving him a sword to fight the Minotaur and a ball string so that he could find his way out of the Labyrinth. Under the cover of night she led him to the Labyrinth and made him promise that he would take her with him when he left.
