She was the daughter of King Minos of Crete and his queen PasiphaĆ«, daughter of the sun-god Helios. Her father had successfully waged war against the Athenians and, in victory, had demanded that every nine years they send seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls to Crete, where they would be devoured by the Minotaur that lived in the Labyrinth. This had been going on for a couple of decades when Theseus volunteered to slay the Minotaur. He took the place of one of the men marked for sacrifice and sailed to Crete.
