Who was the former West Virginia governor that turned up as a taxi driver in Chicago?
That was William Marland, who was governor of WV from 1953-1957. He later battled alcoholism, moved to Chicago and earned his living driving a cab. He died young, at age 47. He was really an interesting guy – he wanted to integrate the schools even though the other Southern governors were opposed to the idea. He also wanted to levy extra taxes on the coal industry in the state because of the depletion of natural resources. He was in the Navy in WWII, a college football star at Alabama and the WV Attorney General before becoming governor.
