Trick question – there is no Nobel Prize in Economics. There IS a Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences (in memory of Alfred Nobel), but this is not considered the equivalent of say the Nobel Peace Prize. Still, it is among the highest international recognitions in the discipline, and unlike other Nobel Prizes, usually comes after an avalanche of other academic awards. Dutch economist Jan Tinbergen won the first prize awarded, for research relating to population growth and welfare economics. His research was built upon by later laureates in the Chicago School.
