She was the first woman accepted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (after being twice rejected) and graduated with a degree in architecture. She established her own practice in San Francisco, and designed Hearst College. But she wasn’t the world’s first woman architect. In the 1880s, Louise Blanchard Bethune was working as professional architect in New York. In 1888 she was elected member of the American Institute of Architects and in 1889 she was named a fellow of the organization. A decade before Julia Morgan was accepted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. but pre-dating even her are a couple notable things: 1869 Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) and her sister Catherine E.
