Who was the first artist ever signed to Apple?

The first artist signed to Apple was Mary Hopkin, followed by Jackie Lomax. They both had songs released in late summer of 1968. The first American to be signed to Apple was James Taylor. James Taylor was discovered by Peter Asher (brother of Jane) and was signed to Apple in 1968. James Taylor however, left the label in 1969 and signed with the Warner Bros label. Taylor cited lack of promotion of his records as his reason for leaving. Too bad for Apple, because Taylor immediately became a hit with “Sweet Baby James” and “Fire & Rain” and was a major success in the 70’s.
