Who was the candidate in the 1982 mayoral race in Philadelphia who changed parties from democrat to republican?
The winner of the 1980 Philadelphia Mayoral race was William J. Green, III. (Democrat) He served from Jan 1980 to Jan 1984 In 1982 William Green indicated he would not run for re-election. Candidates for the Democratic nomination were Thomas Leonard and Wilson Goode. Goode won. Interestingly Frank Rizzo had been the incumbent (Democrat) mayor for two terms from 1972 to 1980. He was not allowed to stand for a third consecutive term. The rules forbade it. However he tried again to run for office as a Democrat in 1983 but lost nomination to Goode. In 1986, he switched sides and ran as a Republican in the 1987 mayoral election. Goode defeated him and won a second consecutive term. Rizzo ran as a republican in the 1991 election but died before the election which was won by Rendell (Democrat). It appears Rizzo was a colorful character for his entire political career…
