The Allies and the Germans The event is normally described as ‘the invasion’ or the since on D-Day the Nazi’s were expecting the invasion to be in the Pas de Calais, and not across Normandy. It did precipitate a number of battles, notably the Battle of the Bulge as troops advanced towards Berlin. The Allies were comprised a joint force of the British, the United States, Canada, Norway, the Free French, the French Resistance and sundry European forces in exile, such as Poles, and some members of the British Empire forces such as Australians and New Zealanders. The Germans by this time were on their own since Italy had surrendered and the association with the Japanese was only ever loose. The Russians were part of the alliance but carried on fighting from the east so did not form part of the largest armada the world has ever seen.
