Who was St. Thomas?
St. Thomas was one of Yesu’s disciples. His name was probably Judas because he is often referred to as Judas Dydimus Thomas. The name Thomas comes from the Greek word thoma, which means twin. So does the Aramaic name Didymus, also mean twin. Thomas was known as the twin of Christ, and as ‘the brother of Christ’. Thomas had grown so much in his spiritual life that people considered him to be like Christ. They often called him the twin of Christ, or brother of Christ. Several references in the scriptures say that Thomas and Yesu looked alike. Even evil spirits thought that Thomas looked like Christ – see Acts of Thomas – and feared him greatly for this and for his divine powers. Christ commissioned Thomas to preach the truth in India in 45AD. This is where Thomas did most of his work. People recognised him as a teacher and a servant of the true God after Thomas had done many miracles.
