Milosevic began his political rise in 1984, when he was elected president of the City Committee of the League of Communists of Serbia in Belgrade. Two years later he was elected president of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Serbia. In 1987 Milosevic organized a meeting of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Serbia where he politically liquidated a faction under the leadership of the then-president of Serbia Ivan Stambolic, who for many years had been Milosevics political patron. After that session Milosevic became uncontrolled leader in Serbia. His party faction was not only bureaucratic but nationalistic. For these reasons, almost all old Communist cadres were against Milosevic and his methods and politics.
