Osceola was a fierce fighter who led the Seminole people in wars against the U.S. Government. The government wanted to relocate the tribe to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River. After the Second Seminole War, while negotiating, Osceola was taken prisoner under a white flag of truce. He was imprisoned inside the fort at St. Augustine, and eventually died. His name means “black drink singer” which comes from a ceremonial ritual where a Seminole warrior drinks a black liquid and cries “Assin-ye-o-la”.
