Before Michealangelo began his work the Chapel walls were a showcase for works of art by Ghirlandaio, Perugino, Signorelli and Botticelli. The Papal architect was Bramante who Michelangelo suspected of setting him up for failure due to poor scaffolding Bramante had built for the project.
