Oda Nobunaga lived in the mid-16th century and was a lord of Owari near present-day Nagoya, one of many provinces in the Sengoku (warring states) period of Japan. At first he was known for being reckless without care until one of his elder advisors committed seppeku (ritual suicide). This sobered him up and he led a surprise attack on the forces of the Imagawa clan as they marched to Kyoto in 1560. After that battle he worked towards unifying Japan. He was innovative but ruthless. In 1575 at Nagashima he used guns in way not used before in battle using palisades and controlled volley firing to wipe out the famed Takeda cavalry. He also burned out the monks on Mt. Hiezan killing thousands and destroying priceless works of art. In 1582 one of generals Akechi Mitsuhide turned on him in a surprise attack and killed Oda and his son.
