Who was Norman Rockwell?
Norman Rockwell, born in 1894 in Manhattan, started his illustration career at age 17 by illustrating “Tell Me Why Stories.†Soon he became art director of “Boys’ Life†magazine and at age 22, he sold his first cover to “The Saturday Evening Post.†While Rockwell freelanced his art to magazines like “Life,†“Literary Digest†and “County Gentleman,†he designed 321 covers for “The Saturday Evening Post†in his lifetime. After leaving the “Post†in 1963 — after 47 years of illustrations — he began working at “Look†magazine, where he illustrated weighty current issues like civil rights. Rockwell’s art resonated with the American public, and he was one of the most popular artists of his time. For example, during World War I, the exhibition of his series “The Four Freedoms†raised $139.9 million for the war effort.
