If it is possible to fix a date as the “beginning” of the Episcopal Church in Nebraska it might be the General Convention of 1838 when the jurisdiction of the Missionary Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Jackson Kemper consecrated September 25, 1835 was extended to include “the Territories of Wisconsin and Iowa and in all other parts of the United States north of latitude 36 1/2 where the Church is as yet unorganized”. The Rt. Rev. Joseph Cruickshank Talbot succeeded Bishop Kemper as Missionary Bishop and was the first Bishop of the Episcopal Church to exercise personal jurisdiction in what was to become the Diocese of Nebraska. Bishop Talbot established St. Mary’s Church in Nebraska City, which had been incorporated in 1858, as his Cathedral Church from 1860 to 1865. The Cathedral of the Diocese was moved by Bishop Talbot’s successor the Rt. Rev. Robert W. Clarkson who was named first Bishop of the Nebraska Territory (and other areas) to Trinity Church in Omaha where the See church of the Dioc
