Who Was Morandi?
Georgio Morandi (1890 -1964) was an Italian artist who is well-known for his still life and landscape paintings. Most famous are his still life arrangements of very simple objects like bottles and boxes. He removed labels from containers and most often used objects that were in earthy, neutral colours. As a result, his paintings were often monochromatic and have a peaceful, soothing (even spiritual) feeling. Painting endless combinations of still life arrangements again and again, Morandi worked from his studio in Bologna. He earned a reputation as somewhat of a recluse because he rarely left his home and studio. But it seemed that Morandi had everything he needed – the bottles and boxes of his paintings could symbolize cityscapes of the world. His paintings reflect a whole universe within the light and dark facades of an arrangement of bottles.
