Lillian Gish was extremely close to D.W. Griffith and when he fell ill Miss Gish helped care for him and his wife. There were rumors that D.W. Griffith and Miss Gish had an affair previously, but whether it was a sexual relationship or not no one could prove. Miss Gish never married. Her last film was with Bette Davis in ‘The Whales of August (1987.) Miss Gish died in 1999.
