Who was Julius Caesar?
Julius Caesar did NOT become emperor. He was a military general that conquered Gaul and led the first Roman invasion into Britain. In 49BC he began a civil war in which he gained power in Rome. He eventually gathered more power to himself, centralising the government. He was later declared ‘Dictator for Life.’ He was assassinated in 44BC by a group of senators led by Junius Brutus and Cassius Longinus (they primarily wanted a return to the republican system). Following the assassination there was a civil war that led to Caesar’s heir Octavian becoming the first emperor of the Roman Empire.
