As I expected, the answers are crediting the Democrats with all this. Well, that’s the story they like to tell. The truth is that the political impetus for Civil Rights legislation began in the REPUBLICAN Party in the 1950s (just as it had after the Civil War), and it was with their efforts and those of President Eisenhower (Republican) that the Civil RIghts Acts of 1957 and 1960 were passed DESPITE strong Southern Democratic opposition and some success (unfortunately) in watering it down. Absurdly, when the Democrats in the Senate, under LBJ’s leadership, managed to kill the 1960 bill, and the Eisenhower White House found a way to rescue part of it and allow LBJ to save face, the press bought the storyline that HE (LBJ) had done it all. The truth is, LBJ was angling for the Presidency and wanted to gain Northern support by seeming to do *something* about civil rights, but didn’t want to really do too much to alienate his fellow Southern Democrats.
