The name `The Doors’ was Jim’s idea and it was inspired by a quote from William Blake, “If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear as it is, infinite.” Jim himself was fond of saying, “there are things known and things unknown and in between are The Doors.” 3. When and where were The Doors formed? The Doors were formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, California. Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek had known each other at UCLA where they majored in film. In the summer of 1965, Manzarek was on the beach in Venice when Morrison came walking toward him. Jim sat down and the two them started talking about what they had been doing during the summer. Jim said he had been writing some songs. Ray asked him to sing one of them. Jim sang a few lines from Moonlight Drive.
