Who was Homer Plessy?
Homer Plessy was an octoroon (a person having one-eighth African ancestry) who lived in New Orleans, Louisiana in the 1890s. He was convicted of violating a state segregation law after refusing to leave a “white’s only” train car. his case rose on appeal to the Supreme Court who upheld the ruling on the grounds that segregation laws are a matter of state legislature and police enforcement. The Supreme Court ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson opened racial segregation to every area of southern life.
