Who was general custer and what is he famous for?
Custer massacred Black Kettle’s camp of Cheyennes in a surprise attack in November1868. This was on the Washita River in today’s Oklahoma, well within the Cheyenne Reservation. Custer had been chasing Cheyennes under Roman Nose who refused to stay on the reservation. Custer was just back from being suspended from the service for a year for being AWOL during a muddled 1866 campaign against the southern Cheyenne, and was anxious to redeem himself.
