Who Was Gene Autry?
Gene Autry was an American singer and actor. He was born on September 29, 1907 in Tioga, Texas in the United States. He was best known as the singing cowboy. Gene Autry was a popular radio personality during the Great Depression in the 1930s. He performed several times at the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1935, he decided to try his skills as an actor. His first big picture was called ‘The Phantom Empire’ and was produced by Republic Pictures. After this film, Gene Autry dedicated himself to writing and acting and soon became known as the father of the western film. Besides acting and singing, Gene Autry always had dreams of playing professional baseball. He never was accepted onto a team. However, because of this dream in 1960, he purchased the California Angels baseball team. He was also the vice president of the American league before he died on October 2, 1998. Singing, acting and baseball were his life passions.
