I think that the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in all its horror, was necessary. According to the western mind set, there is no shame in surrender if the situation is hopeless and if continued resistance will only result in needless casualties. Japanese people (in the WW2 era) did not think that way. Surrender was shameful. Period. Soldiers would rather commit suicide than allow themselves to be captured. That is why the Allied POW’s were treated in such a barbaric manner. Their Japanese captors considered them to be subhuman, little better than animals, who had forfeited all honour by surrendering, and whose only use was to serve the Emperor as slaves. Had the war not been ended by nuclear means, it would have been necessary to have invaded Japan. The Japanese armed forces, and the Japanese people, would have continued fighting beyond the time when the situation was hopeless.
