Erwin Chargaff was born in Czernowitz, Austria on August 11, 1905. He attended the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1928. Later he accepted a job at Yale University where he researched in organic chemistry from 1928 to 1930. During his years of research, he was researching in the University of Yale, the Department of Batcteriology at the University of Berlin (Germany), and from 1933-1934 he worked as a research assoicate at Institut Pasteur in Paris. Later on, he stayed as a research associate in the department of Biochemistry, with all his findings he managed to later become a professor in the field, and being the department chair for four years. Throughout his career he appeared as a visiting lecturer at different universities.
