Who was Clark?
Alexander G. Clark was a free African-American who arrived in Muscatine, Iowa, as a teenager during 1842 and became a leading citizen of the city, the state of Iowa and beyond while fighting for civil rights. His contributions were largely forgotten after his death in 1891, but they were rediscovered in the late 1960s and early 1970s when a women’s study group began researching historic homes, bringing Clark’s story to light.
