Who was Charles Babbage and what did he contribute to computer science?
He has been called the ‘grandfather of the computer’, but his “analytical engine” was never completed. He had the right ideas, but technology just wasn’t ready for him. He created a mechanical calculator, devised the first accurate actuarial tables, invented skeleton keys, the locomotive cowcatcher and an ophthalmoscope to study the retina. He also tried, but failed, to devise a perfect system of predicting the results of horse races.
