Who was Blessed Damien?
Blessed Damien of Molokai was a 19th-century priest who was born Joseph de Vuester in Belgium and became known for his ministry to those suffering from Hansen’s disease (leprosy) in Hawaii. He died of Hansen’s disease in 1889 after years of service in Hawaii. Blessed Damien is the patron of those who have Hansen’s disease, HIV and AIDS, as well as outcasts. He’ll be canonized a saint Sunday by Pope Benedict XVI.
