Angel is far better for Buffy. Whilst I don’t mean to criticize Spike, Angel was the better man(pire). He treated Buffy with far more respect than Spike did. He never abused her or attempted to rape her whilst claiming to love her. Angel left Buffy for a better life because he knew he couldn’t give her what she deserved. Spike couldn’t give Buffy any of the same things either yet he wanted her. Season 7 Spike may have loved Buffy, but I think alot of that was based on selfishness. When it comes to Angel the phrase “If you love somebody let them go” comes to mind as particularly apt. Whilst both with souls Angel and Spike both loved Buffy but whilst Angel’s love was selfless Spikes was not. Angel was the better man…pire. To quote the Bangel fanfic author Ducks… “It was always supposed to be Buffy and Angel.
