Who was Belle Gunness?
Belle Gunness, born Brynhild Pouldatter Storset, November 22nd, 1859 in Selbu, Norway, is one of Americas most notorious female serial killers. Often referred to in later years as Lady Blubeard, the gruesome story of the Belle Gunness murders was formidable enough to inspire folklore and folksong. Belle is believed to have murdered upwards of forty people during her bloody reign at a La Porte, Indiana hog farm in the early nineteen hundreds, although to date, only twelve bodies and several miscellaneous body-parts have been discovered on her former property. Belles modus operandi for finding victims was to place lonely-hearts ads in Scandinavian newspapers looking for a husband (after murdering her first two husbands for the insurance money). Her ads would read something like this: “WANTED — A woman who owns a beautifully located and valuable farm in first class condition, wants a good and reliable man as partner in the same.
