Who was Andrei Gromyko, President of the Soviet Union? How did his role differ from the men like Brezhnev and Andropov who actually ran the country?
Gromyko wasn’t a President of the Soviet Union. The first man to have this title is Gorbachov. Gromyko was a Chairman of the Presidium of Supreme Soviet, i.e. head of Parliament. He had no real power or means to change anything. Before taking this post he was a foreign affairs minister and this is how he became famous and well known in the West.
